Earlier this month, Dominion Energy employees and retirees throughout the Carolinas worked hard to spread holiday cheer to those who need it most through the annual Good Neighbor Fund Christmas Project.
Established in 1982, The Good Neighbor Fund is an employee-led non-profit which provides financial assistance to families who face unexpected tragedies or emergencies. Donations to the Good Neighbor Fund Christmas Project go directly to help local families in need.
More than 1,100 boxes of food and 800 toys were delivered across two states, including families in Charleston, Cayce, Raleigh and Gastonia. The food boxes were packed with enough goods for a family feast, and toys donated by employees were wrapped with care by volunteers ahead of the distribution events.
This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Good Neighbor Fund Christmas Project in North Carolina and the 39th program year in South Carolina.
“Community involvement, direct giving and personal engagement were three areas that caught my attention about the Good Neighbor Fund 20 years ago,” said Julia Wright, local government and economic development manager for Dominion Energy who was part of the organization's inaugural board in North Carolina. “Meeting immediate needs of those in the communities we serve through an employee-led organization speaks volumes about the values of Dominion Energy and my colleagues.”
“This Christmas project marks the culmination of year-round assistance efforts from the non-profit,” said Maryann Wright, customer assistance programs supervisor for Dominion Energy in South Carolina. “The Good Neighbor Fund is just one of the many programs that offer a helping hand to Dominion Energy households. Seeing hundreds of employees and volunteers come together to support the communities we live in and work in is so gratifying.”
Tommy Hilton's family received a package for the first time this year. The West Columbia, South Carolina resident has been battling post-COVID issues since September. He has trouble breathing and requires a cane to get around his home. While he said his health has improved slightly, he has been unable to work since getting sick.
“The community has done a lot to help us get through this,” Hilton said. “It's gone a long way, and we're really thankful for them.”
