For us, this all starts with renewable energy – which comes from sources that are replenished by nature, such as solar, wind, hydroelectric, nuclear and biomass. These energy sources, also called “clean energy” or “green power,” are virtually endless, and allow us to serve our customers in a way that meets their needs while also protecting our planet.
Our commitment to renewable energy drives innovation at Dominion Energy. Our workforce is on the front lines of the clean energy movement, making a difference and delivering value to our customers across multiple clean energy disciplines:
We are developing the largest offshore wind project in the United States – only the second in the nation and the first owned by an electric utility company. The pilot phase will be online in 2020, and subsequent phases will see the project produce enough zero-carbon electricity to power 650,000 homes.
We’re investing in electric vehicle technology under innovative programs such as our electric school bus pilot in Virginia. The first 50 buses are due to roll out in 2020, and with state approval we hope to have at least 1,000 more on the roads by 2025. These zero-emission vehicles don’t stop at just being carbon-neutral – they actually produce energy that can be fed back into the power grid.
Solar energy is a cornerstone of our renewable energy program. We own the 4th-largest solar fleet among utility holding companies in the nation, generating enough energy to power about 600,000 homes at peak output. Upcoming plans include an ambitious large-scale solar energy project at Washington Dulles International Airport in Virginia, which will ultimately deliver clean energy to as many as 25,000 homes.
We proudly own and operate the world's most powerful hydroelectric pumped storage station, providing power to of millions of homes and businesses across six states. Located in Virginia, the station is the largest of its kind in the world, with greater storage capacity than the Hoover Dam.
Our nuclear power program produces a safe, zero-emissions, highly reliable form of renewable energy for our customers – in fact, 40% of our total electricity output comes from our nuclear power stations. Our rigorous focus on safety, security, operational excellence, and continuous improvement ensures that our customers will continue to benefit from this powerful source of carbon-free energy.
We’re joining forces with the nation’s largest pork producer to invest $500 million to capture waste methane from hog farms and turn it into clean, renewable natural gas, or RNG. We’re also partnering with Vanguard Renewables and the Dairy Farmers of America to do the same on dairy farms across the country. These projects are not only pioneering a new source of clean energy, they’re also providing a welcome revenue stream for family farmers and substantially reducing greenhouse gas emissions from agriculture.
Our success with these renewable energy sources keeps us energized to explore the fuels of the future. In fact, we've committed to net zero emissions company-wide by 2050.
