Voltage Optimization utilizes smart meter data to optimize voltage levels in a manner that reduces energy consumption system-wide. It's part of a larger effort (the Grid Transformation Plan) to manage our grid to meet the increase in energy demands while continuing to provide the reliable service that customers expect and deserve.

Energy conservation is a major component of this plan. While customers can participate in a variety of energy-saving programs, system-wide initiatives like Voltage Optimization allow us to be more efficient with the reliable delivery of your power.

The video below explains Dominion Energy's efforts for improving grid resiliency and efficiency, including Voltage Optimization.

Energy flow on the grid of the future needs to look different. As energy needs change, the energy grid will too.

The energy grid is the backbone of providing reliable energy to Virginia homes and businesses. This requires constant management to meet the changing landscape of the energy industry while continuing to provide the reliable service customers expect and deserve. Through the use of smart meter data and examining voltage levels, Voltage Optimization allows us to be more efficient with the reliable delivery of your power.

Voltage is the force that pushes electrical energy through wires to power your devices. This is similar to how water pressure pushes water through a pipe. Higher voltage means more electrical energy flows to your devices. Voltage optimization adjusts this voltage to save energy without sacrificing quality or reliability.

As the voltage on the system is optimized, it's providing more efficient delivery of energy to homes and businesses. It is one component of our larger Grid Transformation Plan – which is committed to modernizing the grid to prepare for the increase in energy demand. The safe, reliable, and increasingly clean delivery of power has never been more important than it is today.

The goal is to achieve a system-wide average of 1% energy savings to help us meet the energy efficiency standards established in the Virginia Clean Economy Act while contributing to our Grid Transformation Plan.

Voltage Optimization benefits all Virginia customers by increasing efficiency while preparing the grid for growing future demand.

Maintenance work and upgrades to the grid are covered as part of your monthly bill.

A software program analyzes smart meter data and sends information to equipment in our substations that adjusts voltage levels to achieve energy efficiency.

Voltage Optimization is a systemwide effort that benefits all Virginia customers. Enablement work (infrastructure upgrades) to get the system ready for this technology began in 2022 and will continue to be performed over the next few years. The smart meter deployment is actively underway and the data from the meters is foundational to the success of the program.

You will be contacted ahead of time with a postcard and a text message. You will be kept informed through every step of the process. Please make sure your contact information is up to date in your online account, so you don't miss out on any notifications. If you don't have an online account, you can easily register one.

You may experience a short-term outage while work is being done in your area. You will be notified with all important details ahead of time.

You may lose power for a short period of time (2-4 hours), but you will know ahead of time.

Voltage Optimization will not negatively impact the quality or reliability of your service. Technology is used to control voltage levels without changing the quality of electric service at your home or business. This initiative is committed to providing energy more efficiently while providing the same reliable service you expect and deserve.

Contractors are working with us to design and construct much of this work. Our contractor partners will have vehicle markings identifying them as authorized contractors of Dominion Energy and they will carry Dominion Energy contractor badges. Click here for a list of authorized contractors we are working with.

Once projects are identified through our smart meter data analysis, they are sent to our authorized contractors who will determine the best solution, formalize a design plan and complete any necessary construction. Examples of these solutions include upgrading overhead or underground conductors and transformers. You will be notified of any and all work planned on your property or in an area that affects you.

Each individual project is different, but impact and visibility to customers is minimal even for our lengthier projects.

Smart meter data is being utilized; specifically, historical voltage levels at peak load for individual customers.

Work affecting your property will be discussed with you prior to the start of construction activities.
