What is Wind Power and How Do Wind Turbines Work?

Wind is one of the most abundant renewable resources that create clean energy. It is largely determined by weather patterns, the surface of the Earth, and bodies of water. Wind turbines are used to convert wind into electrical energy. Whether the turbines are on land or offshore, the process of creating energy is the same. Turbines capture wind with their three blades which turn a generator to create energy.

Wind turbines and their surroundings

The waters off the Atlantic Coast are full of a diverse range of marine life. We took extensive precautions to protect these sensitive ocean creatures while constructing the pilot project. All the knowledge we gained during the pilot project will now be used to inform the commercial project. This commitment to the environment extends across our entire footprint, informing everything we do—from cutting emissions to reducing water use to protecting wildlife.

Offshore Wind Power in Virginia

We're committed to ensuring our customers have the energy they need for the future. This commitment led to the development of the Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind projects: the 12-megawatt pilot project (the first in U.S. federal waters) and the 2.6-gigawatt commercial project (the largest in the U.S.). The pilot project has been operational since 2020 and construction is underway on the commercial project.
