Dominion Energy's commitment to hiring military personnel and veterans

Meet Matt, a former Amphibious Assault Crew Chief in the United States Marine Corps Reserves. He currently works as the Military and Recruitment Program Coordinator for Dominion Energy. As a senior in high school, Matt enlisted in the military. He felt inspired by the encouragement from his father, a 44-year employee of Dominion Energy; and step-father, an Air Force veteran; as well as a persistent recruiter at his high school. Matt recognized that the Marines would provide him the challenges he was looking for after graduation. He was also seeking opportunities to serve and do something meaningful. While in the Marines, Matt worked with amphibious assault vehicles. He was responsible for transporting Marines ashore and providing them support.

Matt served in Marine Reserves and went to college at the same time. Because of this balance, transitioning back to civilian life and into a career at Dominion Energy was relatively easy. But, looking back, there were some challenges to work through that many don’t consider.

“While things are improving, many people or employers don't think about individuals serving in the National Guard or Reserves and the challenges associated with that. People also don’t think about student veterans in college still serving in the National Guard or Reserves. Or trying to manage a transition from the military to student life.”

Matt’s insight and passion has provided him the foundation to serve as Dominion Energy’s current Military and Recruitment Program Coordinator. As such, he handles managing the Troops to Energy Jobs program—and Dominion Energy’s partnership with the Virginia Values Veterans program. He also manages anything else related to implementing or enhancing our efforts and processes for recruiting, hiring, and retaining military and veteran employees across the Dominion Energy footprint. Furthermore, Matt works at the state level and with schools to put in place energy-specific curriculum and courses, which may provide clear education pathways for individuals to become qualified to pursue our industry’s careers.

Matt would recommend a career at Dominion Energy to anyone, but particularly a military person or veteran. “It’s an industry that aligns well with what many veterans experienced in the military, be it the structure, the type of work, the camaraderie, and the family feel,” said Matt.

“Dominion Energy’s core values are also very aligned with that of our branches of the military. We care about our employees and customers, but also work hard to provide our veteran employees with tools and resources that may help them focus on their day job and providing for themselves and their families.”
