Wounded warriors from all military branches took sail on Lake Murray in central South Carolina this month to participate in the 11th annual Troop Appreciation Fishing Derby.

“We have veterans join us from all over the country, so many of them plan weeks to make the trip to the event,” Troop Appreciation Foundation director Mike Glover said. “This is just one way to thank them for keeping our country safe. The Dominion Energy employee volunteers rolled up their sleeves and did a fantastic job from beginning to end. Their support was needed and very much appreciated.”

In partnership with the Troop Appreciation Foundation, the Wounded Warrior Project and others, Dominion Energy volunteers welcomed veterans to the lake on Aug. 10.  Made possible partly by a grant from the Dominion Energy Charitable Foundation, the event recognizes veterans nationwide who experienced physical and psychological injuries during their military service.

“The experiences they carry on their backs inspire us to do better for the community they worked so hard to protect. This event is just one way we can say thank you. We owe them our freedom.”

-Keller Kissam, president of Dominion Energy South Carolina

“Once you get out of the army, everyone goes their separate ways and fights their own battles,” U.S. Army veteran Scott Neil said. “It feels good to be around people who have gone through similar situations as you.”

About 60 veterans participated in the event, which is at no cost to them. Volunteers cleaned over 280 fish so each veteran could take their catch home.

Approximately $13,000 in appreciation gifts and prizes were awarded to participants.  Keller Kissam, president of Dominion Energy South Carolina, presented prizes to the warriors with the five top catches. The top prize was an 8.07-pound bass.

“We want our veterans to know that we appreciate everything they have sacrificed to keep us safe at home,” Kissam said. “The experiences they carry on their backs inspire us to do better for the community they worked so hard to protect. This event is just one way we can say thank you. We owe them our freedom.”

Dominion Energy has a long history of supporting active-duty military and veterans. Ever since employees sent care packages to servicemen fighting in World War I, the company has focused on those who serve our country. One in five new hires at Dominion Energy is a veteran, and the company has made support for the military, veterans, and their families a priority.
