Electric Meter

Energy use is measured in kilowatt hours (kWh). A kilowatt hour is equal to using 1,000 watts of electricity in one hour (or burning a 100-watt bulb for 10 hours). Most meters are read via secure radio frequency by driving or walking near them.

How to Read Your Electric Meter

  • Numbers are read from left to right. To find out the number of kilowatt hours used, take two readings; then subtract the earlier from the more recent.
  • Meters are alternatively flash all 8s and then the cumulative kWh reading. When a meter reaches 99999, it starts over again at 00000.

Natural Gas Meter

Meter with 4 dials

Your meter measures natural gas used in cubic feet. One cubit foot contains approximately 1,000 BTUs of heat – the equivalent of burning 1,000 kitchen matches.

Meters have four or five dials; some with clockwise numbering, others are counter-clockwise. Record the smaller number if the pointer is between two numbers, except between nine and zero.

If the pointer is on a number, look at the dial to the right. If that pointer has not passed zero, record the smaller number.

To find out cubic feet used, take two readings, then subtract the earlier from the more recent.

Solar Meter

Two meters are used for the typical solar installation:

  • The Main Meter (bi-directional readings)
  • The Generation Meter (one-way reading)

How to Read Your Main Meter

The main meter measures the power Dominion Energy South Carolina delivers to you, as well as any excess solar power you send back to us.

  1. What does the arrow on the display mean?
    • If pointed right, Dominion Energy is delivering power to you.
    • If pointed left, Dominion Energy is receiving excess power from you.
  1. What do these numbers represent?
    • This is the Register Number.
  1. What do the flashing numbers represent?
    • You can use the charts below, to identify what each register measures based on your meter type, solar program and Program ID.
  1. Where can I find the main meter number?
    • The main meter number is listed on the front of the meter and on your bill under “Current Charges.”
