Frequently Asked Questions

Data Center Site Selection

Yes. The Dominion Energy Data Center Team can provide electric infrastructure evaluation and preliminary power plan for potential sites being considered. A will-serve letter can also be provided, if required.

  • Sites in proximity to existing transmission lines and substations can shorten the time required to deliver electric power.
  • Less congested areas near transmission lines typically have shorter power delivery timelines than dense residential and urban areas

New Data Service Electric Service Connections

  • The short answer is it depends on customer needs and location characteristics of each new data center development.
  • Typically, the electric service provided to a new data center occurs in stages that match the expected energy usage as the facility ramps into its final loading capacity. This approach involves a “bridging solution” that allows for commissioning and initial electric load while the final power plan is constructed which overlaps the time required for the data center customer to secure permits and complete facility construction.
  • New data centers with expected loads of less than 50 megawatts can frequently be connected by utilizing existing electric distribution infrastructure. From the initial planning conversations these projects typically require 1-2 years to complete. During this time, data centers finalize their building plans, obtain their local construction permits, and complete construction of their facilities.
  • Serving new data centers with expected loads of more than 50 megawatts will most likely require the extension of transmission lines and the construction of a new substation.
  • Our Data Center Team will work with each customer to develop a site-specific power plan.

Many of the required steps to provide power to a data center can be executed concurrently. The Dominion Energy Data Center Team will optimize opportunities to maximize process efficiency. Here are the typical steps to provide power to a new data center.

  • Customer provides site plan, load letter, and load ramp schedule
  • Development of short-term and long-term power plan
  • Design of required electric infrastructure
  • Right-of-way acquisition
  • Permitting Procurement of material (At present, industry-wide supply chain delays are driving current timelines)
  • Regulatory filing (if required)
  • Construction of project

The specific timing depends on the factors noted above, but are largely driven by the location, existing grid characteristics, availability of rights of way, local permitting requirements, material availability, and required regulatory filings.
