Areas developed in accordance with Dominion Energy North Carolina's FERC Hydropower license offer a wide variety of recreational resources on or near Lake Gaston and Roanoke Rapids Lake.

Recreational day use areas offer a wide variety of amenities, including piers/boat docks, trails, swimming and fishing areas, playgrounds, historical features and bathrooms.

Boating & Water Safety

The North Carolina Wildlife Resource Commission and the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries operate and maintain three boat landings on Roanoke Rapids Lake, seven boat landings on Lake Gaston and one boat landing on the Roanoke River just east of the Roanoke Rapids dam tailrace.

Whitewater

The reach of the Roanoke River from the NC Route 48 bridge to the Weldon boat ramp (approximately 5 river miles) offers excellent opportunities for paddlers of various skill levels - depending on water levels.

Dominion Energy provides controlled recreational releases (advance and short-term) from the Roanoke Rapids dam on weekends between June 16 and October 31 to enhance whitewater conditions between the dam and the NC Wildlife Resources boat ramp in Weldon, NC. View our Roanoke River Recreational Information for details and information useful to paddlers.

Environment

As part of our long-term environmental and public service commitment to people who use the lake and river for recreation, we provide water level, flow and quality information.

Roanoke Rapids and Gaston Lakes are valuable resources for scenic beauty, recreational resources and the local economy. How we treat the lakes is important to maintaining that value.

Creel Surveys
