From the beginning, Dominion Energy has partnered with and funded the Virginia Capital Trail Foundation’s Outdoor Equity Fund because of the difference it makes in bringing communities together. The Outdoor Equity Fund has awarded more than $70,000 to recipient organizations that help ensure access to the great outdoors. The stories of local impact told by some of the 2024 Outdoor Equity Fund below speak volumes.
Black Girls Run! is a national running organization that empowers women to train and run their first 5K. African American women aged 21 and above living in the Richmond area can receive coached instructional sessions, as well as access to a dietitian and a physical therapist. These resources help women to finish their first 5K on the Virginia Capital Trail. The organization recognizes how public lands can bring communities like Black Girls Run! together, encouraging their participants to get outside and further their fitness journey alongside others.
Richmond Cycling Corps encourages youth who live in the east end’s public housing projects to experience the outdoors! This organization fosters confidence within Richmond youth and creates meaningful opportunities to build a community through cycling, education, and ongoing mentorship. In addition to physical exercise, RCC provides workforce development opportunities. Individuals gain on-the-job training and customer experience through employment at The Kickstand, a bicycle rental shop located on the Capital Trail.
Sportable leads Virginia in sports and recreation for people with physical disabilities and visual impairments. As one of the top Paralympic Sport Clubs nationwide, the organization transforms lives through adaptive sports like cycling, pickleball, and rock climbing. Sportable also creates enhanced access to the Virginia Capital Trail, allowing Paralympic athletes like Sue Henneberry to build a community through recreational activities.
The Virginia Capital Trail reaches beyond just the Outdoor Equity Fund recipients. The trail also provides economic opportunities for small business along the route.
Cul’s Courthouse Grille has been operating since 2009 but credits their success to the opening of the Virginia Capital Trail in 2015. Cullen Jenkins, owner of Cul’s Courthouse Grille, believes the increased foot traffic created by the trail allows his small business to flourish. The restaurant serves as a place where trail goers can gather for a bite to eat.
