Electric Transmission Project

Glebe
  • Rebuilding and modernizing the Glebe Substation in Arlington County, which was built in the 1970s and is reaching its end of service life.
  • Converting an existing overhead electric transmission line to an underground line between the Glebe Substation and Potomac Yard Transition Station.
  • Decommissioning of the Potomac Yard Transition Station in the City of Alexandria and the existing overhead line from service.

Construction Updates

City of Alexandria side:

  • April 2024: Our teams have completed all tunneling construction activities. Crews are beginning to backfill both the launch and receiving pits, and construct the manholes that will be used to access the underground transmission line.
  • December 2023: The crew has finished boring the second tunnel between the launch and receiving pits and will now work on installing the bundle of conduits within both tunnels.
  • August 2023: The boring for the first tunnel between the launch and receiving pits has been completed. Crews will begin working to bore the second tunnel in September.
  • July 2023: Micro tunneling began.
  • January 2023: Launch pit constructed for micro tunneling activities.
  • December 2022: Construction began in the Potomac Yard Shopping Center to install a sound wall around the launch pit. The launch pit is needed to install the new underground line using the micro tunnel method. The sound wall is 24-feet tall and designed to reduce construction noise from the launch pit.

Arlington County side:

  • April 2024: Our teams have completed all tunneling construction activities. Crews are beginning to backfill both the launch and receiving pits, and construct the manholes that will be used to access the underground transmission line.
  • December 2023: With the completion of tunneling activities, crews will now begin regular work in the receiving pit to install the bundle of conduits within both tunnels.
  • August 2023: Excavation of the receiving pit near the Glebe Substation was completed.
  • June 3-4: Crews will install an additional non-slip coating to the Temporary Boardwalk Diversion to enhance safety for trail users. One half of the trail width will be closed during the installation to allow continued trail traffic. 
  • May 2023: Receiving pit installation begins at Glebe Substation. Truck traffic will increase on S. Eads Street
  • May 7, 2023: Temporary boardwalk diversion opens to the public.
